[2011-09-28] It's OK To Talk About Fight Club

Remember when you were a kid, watching a movie, and there was always a fight seen. Maybe the good guy looked like he was getting his ass kicked, but they always won in the end. Sometimes taking on a group of people at once, or just one big strong guy, but they had some crazy-ass skills that they used. Perhaps you saw it first in Karate Kid, the Matrix or Kung Fu Panda, but you saw it at some point and thought 'Wow, wouldn't it be awesome if I could do that!'
Admit you tried it
Well if you were anything like me, that's exactly what happened. And at the age of 10, I started learning taekwondo. A couple friends I had were doing karate or judo or ballet, and I wanted to do something like that as well...mostly just because it looked cool. I'd been begging my mum for ages - a couple years in fact - before she found a club for me. So I signed up, and there it was...one step closer to becoming a Jedi. After one year I was  already blue belt and able to Jackie Chan anyone who messed with me...in my mind anyway. But then we moved, and I suspected my journey was over, so close yet so far. My dad started looking very hard, trying to find the right club for me to join and continue my training, when at last he found one.
Just like when Luke found Yoda, I had found a new master
to help me complete my training.
Sun Bae Taekwondo and Hapkido is a Brisbane based club, owned by Master Bradley Tantell, and it would be my new club. So I went along to try it out, only to find it was even better than my old club. One year on and there I was, the final stage of red belt, and ready to go for black belt. Jump seven and a half years down the track and you're in the present. I am now a 2nd Dan black belt and run my own centre for Sun Bae.
Sun Bae offers professional martial arts training, suitable for kids and adults, whether you're a beginner or experienced. Now jump back to your childhood memory of dreaming to be a martial arts master...still interested? Then join a club! Perhaps my club is a bit of a travel, particularly if you don't live in Australia, or even Queensland for that matter. In which case, find your local taekwondo club and tell them you want to learn the ways of the force.
This could be you, hopefully red...not blue.
If you've ever considered starting martial arts training, I highly recommend it. There's a wide variety depending on what your're after, whether its Muay Thai, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, MMA or something else (such as taekwondo...it's better, trust me). It teaches fitness training that you won't get at a gym, as well as important self defence techniques against armed attack and also hand-to-hand combat training. One of the best things to get out of taekwondo is the self-discipline. I was never too much of a trouble maker as kid anyway, but learning taekwondo has taught me even more about self control and how to focus myself. Learning taekwondo is also great for building confidence in yourself and your abilities. The idea of doing a grading (like an exam, to get the next rank) might be scary...but it's nothing on public speaking, and I hate public speaking. Well I did, but not so much any more, in fact any sort of performance, interview, or exam, I can cope with much better now.
It's easier if you know how to land a hook-kick
on their face, you know...just in case.
So what are you waiting for? Whether it's to show off to your friends, defend your friends (you know, the ones that always seem to get themselves in trouble?), defend yourself, get fit, or just cos you think it's cool...get into it. Wherever you go, just tell them I sent you.

I should also mention there's a new poll up. 1991 was certainly the best year for music from the 90's, and since many bands are celebrating their 20th anniversary of a '91 breakthrough album, I thought it'd make an interesting poll topic. So vote away, as long as it's for Blood Sugar...
